Why the Number 131?

“So, why the number 131?” I  get asked this question a lot, and the answer has two parts. The first part reveals why I am passionate about brainstorming, and the second part is about the number 131 itself.

Years ago, during a particularly challenging time in life, I reached out to a number of people for advice. The wisdom I received was similar, and went something like this:

  • Pray more…
  • Read the Bible…
  • Attend church regularly…
  • And trust God for the results.

I took this advice to heart and discovered that turning to the spiritual disciplines did much to strengthen my faith. Unfortunately, it did very little to resolve the issues at hand. In fact, in many ways, the problems grew worse.

So, I spent the next few years doing what many people who find themselves in this situation do. I began living out the definition of insanity. I tried harder and did more of the same thing while expecting different results.

Of course, I ended up waiting… and waiting… and waiting… but those results never came.

Getting New Results

Finally, I decided to try something new, and this was when my situation began to improve. I discovered a simple but powerful principle. [Tweet “New actions lead to new results!”] Fortunately, my crazy, chaotic, and sometimes downright weird journey brought about many blessings in the end.

In addition to leading me to my incredible wife, it is also the motivation behind this blog and most of my books. It was during the struggles that I discovered I am passionate about helping people live healthier, happier, and more connected lives by having better conversations. In other words, I want to inspire others to stop living out the definition of insanity and to try something new instead.

As you have probably noticed, many of my books include some element of brainstorming–hence the number 131. I love inspiring others to find creative solutions to their problems. Deciding on the number 131 was easy. I chose it because other brainstorming books typically include 101 ideas, and I wanted to contribute a little bit more to the conversation 🙂
